After Jane (pictured above on the left) had a stroke, the aphasia often made it difficult to communicate. So, she chose not to struggle to express her inner world. Then when dementia began to steal Jane’s memories as well, the family thought they were losing her. That was until they found our Center.

Our Center brought Jane back to life, and the whole family has noticed the change. Now, Jane can’t wait to tell stories about the friends she’s made and the activities she’s done at the Center.

The family couldn’t be more grateful. And, for Laura (pictured above on the right), seeing her mother reconnect with the world has also brought back memories of Jane’s strength, warmth, and resilience. Keep reading for their story.

Favorite Childhood Memories

When asked about her favorite childhood memories with her mother, Laura immediately recalled the parties. She remembers sitting with her siblings and cousins to make hors d’oeuvres to place on party trays complete with little signs to identify them.

She also recalls raucous kitchen dance parties where family members would use various kitchen utensils as instruments as they danced and belted out their favorite songs. And, Laura always knew they would have a house full of people if Jane made her famous roast. It was smothered in hollandaise sauce and served with Yorkshire Pudding made from the drippings.

A Mother’s Advice: “Can’t Means Won’t”

Jane often repeats the advice passed down through generations in their family: “Can’t means won’t.” When Laura is discouraged, she remembers how her mother embodied this advice. Jane is dyslexic, but she never let that stop her from reading big books and pursuing certifications to enhance her career. She started as an Activities Assistant and eventually became an Activities Director at a nursing home.

Jane also taught Laura the power of meditation and mind control early in life. As a child, it helped Laura neutralize the nightmares that were plaguing her, but to this day, she will meditate to visualize solutions to difficult problems in her life.

Thanks to Laura for sharing her uplifting stories about her mother, Jane! Her reflections are a beautiful reminder of the strength, wisdom, and love that connect generations of families in our community.
