In 1988, President Ronald Reagan declared August 21st to be National Senior Citizens’ Day to recognize and appreciate seniors’ contributions to society. In his proclamation he wrote,
“We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are… places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity.”
We couldn’t agree more! So, what can we do to celebrate our beloved seniors on August 21st, and every day? Read on for a few ideas.
Spend time with a senior citizen.
Sharing our time with others might be one of the deepest expressions of appreciation. Humans are social creatures, and that is still true as we age! So, whether it’s a trip to the park, a walk down memory lane, or simply sharing a meal, spend some time with your senior loved ones.
Help with chores and errands.
We all need help from time to time, so maybe you could show your appreciation through acts of service. You might volunteer to help a senior neighbor or loved one with mowing the lawn or other chores or errands. It might not seem like much, but taking them to the grocery store, or helping with dishes or laundry could have a big impact on your senior’s life.
Volunteer at a senior center or nursing home.
You might also consider volunteering at your local senior center or nursing home. Through your volunteer work, you could connect with a senior who doesn’t have family or friends around to visit them. You could also consider volunteering for places like the PA Link Check In Line, where you can converse with seniors who need companionship.
A Final Word…
August 21st is officially National Senior Citizens’ Day, but you can show seniors you care all year long! If you have a beloved senior in your life, spend time with them sharing memories, playing games, or enjoying great food. You could also offer to help with chores and errands, or volunteer to help seniors in your community.
Whatever you do, take time to show seniors you care; it will improve their lives, and yours!
