Every third Sunday in June, we celebrate Father’s Day, a holiday created by Sonora Smart Dodd in the early 20th century to honor her father, a widowed Civil War veteran who raised six children on his own.

As our dads age and face physical or cognitive decline, celebrating them can become more complicated. But every father deserves to feel seen, appreciated, and loved on Father’s Day, and every day.

Read on for a few senior-friendly ideas to help you celebrate your fathers and grandfathers!

Host a Barbecue

What says “Dad” more than a classic backyard BBQ? Whether at home or at a local park with public grills, it’s a great way to gather the family, enjoy the outdoors, and honor the father figures in your life.

Check out a few of these local parks to find the ideal place for your family to share a meal and enjoy some sunshine together.

Attend a Classic Car Show

Is your dad or granddad a car enthusiast? There are several classic car shows happening in the Philadelphia area this June, making for a memorable and low-stress outing. Even if your dad has limited mobility, there’s usually space to push a wheelchair, making the event accessible for him.

Sometimes, attendees are even encouraged to test drive the classic cars. So, you might be able to take a fun drive with dad as well!

Scrapbook and Share Memories

Sometimes, the best gift is quality time. Creating a scrapbook or reminiscing over old photos can support memory and cognition. And, it’s a great option for dads who would prefer to stay home in a safe environment with loved ones.

A Final Word. . .

Remember, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to show your dad you care this Father’s Day. The greatest gift you can give him is quality time. Whether you are sharing a meal, attending an event to make new memories, or scrapbooking to remember old ones, be sure to show your fathers and grandfathers you care!
